Abstract

This study examines the long-term shift in cropping patterns in India and major seed-spice-producing states namely Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan, over the period 1984-85 to 2023-24. Using secondary data from official sources. The study evaluates changes in cropped area, value of output (VOP), growth, instability, and crop diversification through the Herfindahl–Hirschman Index and Crop Diversification Index. The results reveal a clear structural transformation in Indian agriculture, characterized by a gradual decline in the dominance of cereals and millets and a rising importance of high-value crops such as fruits and vegetables, condiments and spices, oilseeds, and fibers. At the national level, a widening gap between area and VOP share highlights increasing value intensification, particularly in horticulture and spices. State-level analysis shows region-specific diversification pathways: Gujarat exhibits strong market-led diversification toward oilseeds, fibers and seed spices; Madhya Pradesh demonstrates a transition towards oilseeds and horticultural crops; and Rajasthan reflects fodder and oilseed led value diversification under arid and semi-arid conditions, with notable expansion of seed spices. Declining Herfindahl indices and rising diversification indices across all regions confirm increasing crop diversification over time. The overall findings underscore a shift from a staple-oriented to a value-intensive agricultural system, with important implications for farm income growth, resource sustainability, and region-specific agricultural policy formulation.
