Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Instructions to authors

The Journal of Spices and Aromatic Crops (JOSAC) publishes critical reviews, original research articles and research notes on all aspects of spices, aromatic, medicinal and related crops. Any one of the authors should be a member of the Indian Society for Spices for publishing an article in JOSAC. Unsolicited book reviews are not generally published.

Manuscript submission

Manuscripts should be addressed to the Editor, Journal of Spices and Aromatic Crops, ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research, Marikunnu P.O., Kozhikode–673 012, Kerala, India.

Articles published or submitted elsewhere will not be accepted. Manuscripts should be written in standard English (adopting British spelling) and submitted in triplicate (the original manuscript and two copies, including tables, figures and references). Manuscripts should be typed neatly, double spaced throughout on one side of A4 paper with margins of 3 cm on all sides and numbered serially. The journal encourages submission of manuscripts as e-mail attachment (josac@spices.res.in).

Authors are advised to consult, Scientific Style and Format: The CBE Manual for Authors, Editors and Publishers, 6th Edition, 1994, Council of Biology Editors, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, for general guidelines regarding preparation of manuscripts. Authors are requested to follow the guidelines strictly while submitting the manuscript to avoid delay in processing and publishing. Articles that are not submitted in JOSAC format will be rejected without refereeing.

All articles submitted to JOSAC will be subjected to peer reviewing and will be sent back to the authors along with the referees comments for revision. The revised article should be returned in electronic form, in addition to a hard-copy print-out and the original. The electronic manuscript should be in a CD and labelled properly giving details like file name, operating system and software used. The journal also encourages submission of revised manuscripts as e-mail attachment (josac@spices.res.in).

Review articles should not exceed 25 pages of printed text including tables, figures and references. Research articles and notes should not exceed 10 pages of printed text including tables, figures and references (1 page of printed text = approximately 500 words).


Organization of manuscript

The manuscript should be organized in the following format:

A short running title (including the authors surnames).

The main title should be brief and informative (avoid vague and generalized title). The complete scientific name (genus, species and authority) should be used for organisms mentioned in the title.

Name(s) of author(s) (indicate corresponding author with superscript numerals along with e-mail address).

Address(es) should be complete with PIN code.

Abstract should be brief (not exceeding 150 words) indicating the scope and conclusions of the study. Abbreviations should be avoided in the abstract.

Keywords (a maximum of six) suitable for indexing, should be given in alphabetical order.

Abbreviations of biological, chemical and related terms should be defined in full and given alphabetically.

Introduction should be brief and define the scope of the work without an exhaustive review of literature.

Materials and methods should provide adequate information on the materials used and the techniques followed in the study.

Results and discussion should be combined and should not be a routine statement of information presented in the tables. The significance of the results in relation to other relevant published work should be highlighted in the discussion.

Citation of personal communications and unpublished data should be avoided in the text. Literature citations in the text should indicate the authors name and year of publication. Examples: Jones (1999); Rani & Grover (1999). When there are more than two authors, the first author should be named followed by et al. Example: Prakash et al. (1999).

Acknowledgements should be brief.

References may be listed alphasbetically.

References should include name(s) of author(s), followed by authors initials, year of publication, title of article, name of journal (using standard abbreviations), volume and page numbers. Books must include name of publisher and location.

Each table should be typed on a separate page. Tables should be numbered serially (in the order in which they appear in the text) with Arabic numerals, followed by the title, which should be self explanatory. Vertical rules should not be marked within the table.


Figures (photographs, graphs and diagrams) should be numbered serially (in the order in which they appear in the text) with Arabic numerals followed by the title (legend). Legends for figures should be typed on a separate sheet. Bar scales should be directly drawn on the figures to indicate magnification. Photographs should be submitted as black and white/colour high contrast glossy prints pasted on a white card and arranged into plates if photographs are more than one. All figures (including photographs) should be sent as hard copy even if an electronic version of the manuscript is submitted. The journal undertakes printing of selected colour photographs, in case the authors are willing to pay the cost of the same. The rates of printing of colour photographs would be informed at the time of acceptance of the manuscript and the authors should pay the full cost of the same in advance. When multi-part figures (including photographs) are submitted, each part should be clearly identified in the legend with lower case letters. All figures should be identified by writing the number and title of the figure and authors name on the reverse side with a soft pencil. The top of the figure should also be indicated on the reverse side.


The final proof will be sent to the senior or corresponding author for correction, only when it is absolutely essential, which should be returned immediately. The corrections should be limited to errors in typesetting.


No reprints or copies of the journal will be supplied. However, a PDF version of the article would be sent to the senior or corresponding author.
